Job Description
Client’s Information Technology Services Department is
seeking a highly motivated Data Engineer to support Client’s enterprise data
strategy by designing, building, and maintaining modern data pipelines and
integrations that power analytics, dashboards, AI initiatives, and operational
decision-making across departments. This position is a member of ITS’s Data
insights Team and will also serve as a backup system administrator to
Snowflake, Metro’s chosen enterprise cloud data platform. This role ensures Metro’s
data is secure, reliable, and available, helping departments deliver better,
faster, and more equitable services for residents. As the adoption of Metro’s
enterprise data program is expanding, we are needing to expand our team size to
keep pace with building the data pipelines to support all of our new analytics
and AI use cases.
Scope of Work
- Design, build, maintain and monitor scalable data
pipelines using Fivetran, API integrations, and custom ETL/ELT processes.
- Develop and optimize SQL-based transformations in
Snowflake.
- Build clean, validated datasets that power
dashboards, analytics models, and AI tools (e.g., Tableau, Snowflake
Cortex).
- Automate recurring workflows using Python or
comparable scripting languages.
- Integrate data from on-prem systems, SaaS
applications, and cloud environments into Snowflake.
- Implement data quality checks, lineage, and
metadata documentation in line with Metro’s data governance framework.
- Troubleshoot, monitor, and resolve data pipeline
issues with IT and application owners.
- Support self-service analytics by improving
dataset structure, documentation, and performance.
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science,
Information Systems, Data Engineering, or related field (or equivalent
experience).
- Five or more years of experience in data integration, database
development, or data engineering.
- Strong SQL skills and experience with relational data modeling.
- Understanding of ETL/ELT concepts and enterprise data warehouse
patterns.
Experience
- Hands-on experience with Snowflake as a cloud data
platform.
- Experience in gathering business and functional
requirements and translating into technical data requirements.
- Experience in integrating complex cross-agency
processes and data models.
- Experience with Fivetran connectors and
transformations.
- Experience with Python for data workflows,
automation, or quality checks.
- Familiarity with Tableau datasets, extracts, and
performance considerations.
- Knowledge of data governance, security, and
privacy requirements (public-sector experience is a plus).
Preferred Knowledge and Skills
- Designing scalable, maintainable data pipelines
and warehouse structures.
- Writing clean, efficient SQL queries and
transformation logic.
- Troubleshooting complex data flow issues across
multiple systems.
- Automating repetitive or manual data processes to
improve efficiency.
- Prioritizing work across multiple projects and
deadlines.
- SQL, relational database concepts, and data
modeling best practices.
- ETL/ELT development patterns, including automation
and orchestration.
- Cloud data warehousing technologies, especially
Snowflake.
- Python scripting for data transformation, testing,
and automation.
- Business intelligence and reporting platforms
(e.g., Tableau).
- Data governance principles, including quality,
lineage, and metadata management.
- Security and privacy requirements related to data
integration and storage.
- Work collaboratively with cross-functional teams
across ITS and Metro departments.
- Evaluate data source quality, limitations, and
appropriate use.
- Maintain high accuracy and attention to detail in
fast-moving environments.
- Adapt to new tools, technologies, and approaches
as Metro’s data landscape evolves.
- Support data initiatives that improve
transparency, service delivery, and equitable outcomes for residents.
