Job Description:     
Summary: The main function of a research engineer is to research and investigate the design, functionality and maintenance of mechanical products, equipment, systems and processes. A typical research engineer has the ability to make engineering drawings, and read and interpret blueprints.

Job Responsibilities:
- Research, design, develop, manufacture, and test tools, engines, machines and other mechanical devices.
- Research and analyze customer design proposals, specifications, manuals to determine time and cost feasibility to complete projects.
- Assist drafters in developing the structural design of products using tools, equipment or software.

Skills:
- Creativity, verbal and written communication skills, analytical and problem solving ability.
- Team player and detail oriented.
- Ability to make sketches, engineering drawings and common computations.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawing, schematics and computer-generated reports.
- Previous experience with computer applications and software related to engineering field, such as Computer Aided Design (CAD).

Education/Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in engineering required.
- 0-2 years experience required.

Position’s Contributions to Work Group: 
- Plan and execute testing of mining and construction equipment and technology.
- Validate that new products and updated products meet engineering requirements. 
- Make safety and health a priority during all work (and home) activities. Engage in Client's culture of safety and participate in efforts and activities to continuously improve the safety of operations. 
- With support from a senior test engineer, create project plans for test activity, write work instructions, manage, and participate in building and modification of mining machines, outline instrumentation requirements for testing, conduct testing, analyze test results, communicate findings, and write technical summary reports. 
- Apply technical skills to develop and validate any machine systems and subsystems including structural, mechanical, hydraulic, cooling, engine, powertrain, electrical, electronics, and software. 
- Use engineering systems to look up drawings, specifications, and solid models.
- Apply knowledge of machines and machine systems to perform troubleshooting of malfunctioning components, systems, and machines.
- Learn the fundamentals of mining equipment operations and maintenance.
- Learn through on-the-job training to operate mining equipment. 
- Provide ideas for continuous improvement (CI) to the safety, quality, velocity, and cost of engineering and operations at the proving ground. 
- Aid supervisor in implementation of CI ideas.

Typical task breakdown:
- A typical day can vary depending upon machine and test schedules.
- On average a candidate will spend 50% of their time in the office planning, analyzing, and reporting on test data.
- The remainder of the time the incumbent will be working alongside mechanics and instrument technicians, conducting on machine testing, validation, and troubleshooting machine systems as needed.

-  Work with other engineers, technologists, mechanics, instrumentation technicians, operators, and logisticians in a collaborative team environment to complete complex tasks safely, with the highest quality, while meeting project schedules and budgets.    

Work environment:  
- Fast paced, highly interactive. 
- Will have to withstand weather elements.
- PPE gear required, boots
- 50/50 split

Education & Experience Required:  
- Years of experience: 2 years 
- Degree requirement: Bachelor's degree in engineering required. (no 2 year degrees) Open to Master’s

Top 3 Skills 
Technical skills with MS Office and engineering software. 
Able to work in Tucson area climate.  
Hands on experience desired.


Additional Technical Skills  
(Required)
- Use software like Excel, Tableau, DATK to analyze test data. 
- Use MS Office applications to create effective technical and communication documents. 

 
(Desired)  
- Experience with SuperComm 2, Cadet, Client Electronic Technician, CANape and electrical system troubleshooting is highly desired.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawing, schematics and computer-generated reports.

- Ability to interact effectively with product group partners and senior engineers as well as TPG operations
