Why this Role?
- Within LPSD, the Core Components team is responsible for the design and validation of the engine’s core internal components, including rotating components, PRL, valvetrain, heads, blocks, and housings. A test engineer within Engine Systems & Package Dynamics (ESPD) team supports this work through test planning, execution, analysis, and communication of results for NPI, NTI, CPI, NSI, and Assurance of Supplier programs.
Typical task breakdown:
- This position is for an agency engineer responsible for developing, conducting, analyzing, and managing engine structures & dynamics validation tests using Client standards & technologies. Validation will be of engine components and systems for Large Power Systems Division (LPSD). Candidate must be able to evaluate complex structural failure modes and provide technical guidance/expertise to drive NTI, NPI, and CPI product solutions.
- Utilizing data acquisition systems (eDAQ, LMS, cDAQ), analyzing data (linear vibration, stress/strain, ME-SCOPE, LMS), performing modal testing, coordination of design and procurement of prototype hardware, and setting up test (instrumentation & gaging as appropriate).
Interaction with team:
- This position will be accountable for establishing strong ties with the client and will work with multiple teams (such as design and simulation). Scope of work will also include project planning, report generation, and communication of conclusions & results
Team Structure
- 10 test engineers in addition to 4 technicians supporting engineers
Work environment:
- Tests will encompass a variety of on-engine and bench testing for various core engine systems (including genset package, Rotating Components, Cylinder Pack, Head & Block). Tests will be conducted in the Tech Center engine labs, Lafayette IN engine center, Peoria IL & Tucson AZ proving grounds, 3rd party engine and shake labs, and field sites. May require 25% travel.
Education & Experience Required:
- Years of experience: 2+ years of testing experience
- Degree requirement: BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering
