Role & Responsibilities

The PO is the member of the Agile team who serves as the Customer proxy responsible for working with Product Management and other stakeholders—including other POs—to define and prioritize stories in the team backlog. This allows the Solution to effectively address program priorities (features and Enablers) while maintaining technical integrity.  Ideally, the PO is collocated with the rest of the team, where they typically share management, incentives, and culture.   The PO also attends most relevant Product Management meetings about planning and Program Backlog/Vision refinement.

Responsibilities, the PO fulfills the following duties: 

Skills Required:

•           Solid understanding of eCommerce, omnichannel (a plus) and demonstrated interest and experience in leading technology projects

•           Solid understanding of UX principles of business-to-business tools content and data management tools as well as consumer facing interfaces.

•           Familiarity and passion for eCommerce trends and best practices

•           Understanding of how to design tests and interpret test results

•           Experience with analytics tools and data-driven decision-making

•           Ability to lead ideation workshops and product planning sessions

 

At scale, a single person cannot handle product and market strategy while also being dedicated to an Agile team. Since Product Management and the PO share the content authority for the program, it’s important to have a clear delineation of roles and responsibilities, as illustrated in Figure 1.

Job Description

The Product Owner (PO) is an Agile Team role responsible for providing development teams with a clear business vision of the work to be performed. The PO becomes the voice of the customer and implements the vision of the Product Manager.

The PO works as a team member on 1 or 2 Agile Teams. The PO meets daily with the team and works closely with customers key stakeholders.

 

Key Responsibilities:

•           Participate in product planning and forecasting with the product management team

•           Maintain and prioritize the team backlog

•           Create features and user stories that meet business needs

•           Develop user story acceptance criteria

•           Meet with team as needed for user story refinement

•           Provide insight to sizing features

•           Be available to team to answer questions on a near daily basis

•           Ensure completed stories meet acceptance criteria

•           Attend daily standups on a regular basis

•           Organize and facilitate sprint reviews with customers and team

•           Accept ownership of the team backlog

•           Needed Skills:

•           Highly collaborative with good conflict resolutions skills

•           Ability to work directly with customers and technical team

•           Some domain knowledge of the product being created

•           Ability to clearly and accurately articulate, in writing the business needs

•           Decision making skills

•           Qualifications:

•           Experience with agile methodologies

•           Experience managing team backlogs and product roadmaps

•           SAFe PO/PM, CSPO or similar certifications

•           Participate in team demo and retrospective
